Regretfully, we are Canceling our Spring Community Dinner

Dear Friends,

It’s with great regret that on behalf of the board members of the West Roxbury Friends of Rosie’s Place, I inform you that the board has decided that it’s in the best interest of our community-at-large to cancel our Community Dinner scheduled for Saturday, March 28th because of concerns surrounding the coronavirus COVID19.

This decision was made after careful consideration of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines.  Three factors in particular led to the board’s decision.  Last year, WRFORP was fortunate to have 240 supporters attend the dinner.  Large gatherings such as this are being discouraged.  Secondly, the CDC considers people over 65 years of age in a high-risk category.  Again, we are fortunate to have many long-time supporters, many of whom are over 65.  We do not want to put any of our supporters at increased risk.  In addition, another factor that could not be ignored is that our workers are a team of loyal volunteers.  Many places of business have closed for a day or more to educate their staff on how to handle food, wash surfaces, interact with others, etc.  Unfortunately, we don’t have that capacity.  These reasons made canceling the Community Dinner a difficult but responsible decision.

For all our supporters who paid in advance for admission to the Community Dinner, we are offering you 2 choices.  You may request that (1) the money you paid for admission be converted into a donation to WRFORP or (2) the money you paid for admission be returned to you.  Our all-volunteer team will grant your request in as timely a manner as possible, and board member Lisa Sankowski will be reaching out soon to everyone who has already paid.

For those of you who have generously contributed to our silent auction, please know that we are investigating the possibility of an online auction.  More will be shared on this in the weeks to come.

Be assured that every donation, whether cash or in-kind, will benefit Rosie’s Place, the Roslindale Food Pantry, Rosie’s Place Food Pantry, and camperships for homeless or less advantaged children.

Thank you so much for your continued support over many years.  WRFORP is fortunate to have so many caring and loyal friends.  We look forward to seeing you at our Fall Brunch!

WRFORP President

Summer fun belongs to everyone!

Camp_4

West Roxbury Friends of Rosie’s Place founders Alice & Bill Hennessey and Helen & Bob Haley, summered with their families in Hull, MA. There they learned about and became deeply involved with Sunset Point Camp. For nearly 100 years, Sunset Point Camp has provided a dream vacation at the seashore to low-income, at-risk children aged 6-13 from Greater Boston. Nearly 450 city-based children travel to Hull each summer for a one- or two-week overnight camp experience letting them enjoy the fresh air, learn new talents, receive academic summer support, and simply have fun.

At the encouragement of Alice, Bill, Bob and Helen, and in addition to our support for Rosie’s Place and the Roslindale Food Pantry, WRFORP began to contribute to Sunset Point and has since expanded to support other camp programs that serve Boston-area children who would not otherwise be able to access a summer camp experience.

This summer, thanks to your generosity, we are able to provide financial support to:

We hope you and your family are enjoying all the joys of summer, and we are grateful for your support in making this joy accessible to others.

Neighbors share fun – and share with others – at our 17th Annual Spring Community Dinner

Thank you so much to everyone who joined us and contributed so generously to our 17th Annual Spring Community Dinner and Fundraiser on April 6, 2019 at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church in West Roxbury.

Crowd

Attended by over 250 guests, our annual spring dinner benefits Rosie’s Place, a sanctuary for poor and homeless women; the Roslindale Food Pantry; and summer camperships for children in need.

Beth Germano of WBZ-TV was our spectacular MC, and music for dining and dancing from DJ Patrick McIntyre of MCO Productions Brighton, who partially underwrote his services, added to the fun of the evening.

Rosie’s Place Director of Communications, Michele Chausse, thanked our guests, and we were happy as always for the consistent support and presence of City Councilor At-Large Annissa Essaibi George and District 6 City Councilor Matt O’Malley, who also made a special presentation on behalf of the Boston City Council honoring our graduating Rosebuddies.

Rosebuddies

We are very grateful to Rockland Trust, Gold Sponsor for this and all of our events.  And thanks to Eastern Bank, our Campership Sponsor, and Brookline Bank, our Rosie’s Place Dinner Sponsor!

We want to express our sincere thanks to all the individuals and businesses whose Dessertgenerous donations made the evening possible: Eileen Saliba, Gourmet Caterers, Roche Bros. Supermarkets, Dancing Deer Baking Co.Blanchards Wine & Spirits, and Henry’s Market. And, of course, our team of expert cookie bakers!

Gift certificates, gift baskets, sports items, scratch lottery tickets, and more – all donated by local individuals, organizations, and businesses – were raffled during silent and live auctions.  (See the full list of generous donors in our event program.)

Auction

The event’s success is due in large part to the support of the St. George church community and Pastor Father Timothy Ferguson, who have hosted us for many years in their lovely space, and spacious kitchen!

And our Board members and many volunteers worked tirelessly before and during the dinner to ensure it was a wonderful evening for everyone.
