Remembering Helen Haley

Helen  Haley, our dear friend, passed away at the age of 90 on October 2nd.  Helen and her husband, Bob, along with four of their close friends and neighbors, founded the West Roxbury Friends of Rosie’s Place in 1981.

Helen was loved by all who knew her.  She was kind, thoughtful, and welcoming.  It’s not surprising that she volunteered her time to make life easier for others in need of friendship.

Helen was a longtime volunteer at Rosie’s Place and was part of a lunch meal team for many years.  She was also instrumental in the success of our fund raising events for Rosie’s Place, the Roslindale Food Pantry, and Sunset Point Summer Camp for less advantaged children from Boston.  Learn more about Helen’s wonderful life in The Boston Globe.

We are grateful to have known Helen and are richer for it.

Rosebuddies – The youth chapter of the WRFORP

Rosebuddies Colin, Hannah & Teddy Johnston

The Rosebuddies program began in 2003 with three young, dedicated students: Kara, Laura, and Michaela. They began by having food drives for the Roslindale Food Pantry and serving meals at Rosie’s Place. This youth volunteer group has grown, and over the past 13 years has included many middle and high school boys and girls from the Roslindale and West Roxbury community.

Many schools now recognize the importance of community service and require their students to gather community service points or hours by participation in worthwhile community service activities. Participation in the Rosebuddies is a great community service opportunity, and the group currently enjoys over 20 volunteers who routinely help with our food drives and major events.

  • Food Drives     Food Drives help the Rosebuddies to collect various food items for Rosie’s Place and the Roslindale Food Pantry. Items may include peanut butter, canned goods, cereal or other non-perishable items. Roche Bros. Supermarket has been the site of many of our food drives.
  • Harvest Brunch & Community Dinner    Rosebuddies play a key role at our two major annual fundraising events. Before the events, they stuff envelopes and help prepare invitations for mailing. During the events, they mingle with donors and sell raffle tickets to our loyal and generous supporters.

Our current group of Rosebuddies represents six different schools in the Boston area: Joyce Kilmer K-8 School, Boston Latin School, Holy Name School, Ursuline Academy, Catholic Memorial School, and St. Sebastian’s School.
